Expansion

As our community grows, we continue to grow with it. Here's an update on HCA Florida North Florida Hospital's recent completed expansion projects.

Expansion

In November 2020, we opened three new units as a result of the completion of our $90 million South Tower Expansion project. The new floors on the South Tower include an 18-bed Medical Intensive Care Unit, a 30-bed Orthopedic Unit and a 30-bed Postpartum Unit. These units include private rooms and innovative technology (Apple TVs, new beds with USB charging capabilities, etc.) to make their patients' stay more comfortable. Another part of this project was also renovating the former postpartum unit to create a new antepartum unit, where expecting mothers with high-risk pregnancies can receive care and monitoring should they require it during their pregnancy.

Additionally, we opened a brand new Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in April 2021, expanding the hospital's capabilities to care for sick and premature infants. The new unit has 25 beds and can care for babies of any age or weight who are critically ill and require advanced equipment and services. Previously, some mothers and babies would have to move to another facility to receive a higher level of care depending on the child's circumstances. Now, our new facility will be able to maintain continuity of care for patients in our hospital.

The Level III NICU is a newly renovated space with large rooms that give parents plenty of space to be able to support their baby. The new NICU also has state-of-the-art equipment, including new isolette beds, continuous cardiorespiratory monitoring, new neonatal ventilators for patients needing respiratory support, comprehensive radiology services and breast pumps for each new mom. We also have cameras for each patient isolette, allowing parents to visit their babies from anywhere, anytime.

With these new additions, HCA Florida North Florida Hospital now has a licensed capacity of 510 beds. As further expansion updates are announced, they will be posted on this webpage. Thank you for your support of our hospital as we grow with the North Central Florida community.

Quality

Delivering quality healthcare to North Central Florida

Quality healthcare is important to each and every patient. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality defines quality healthcare as “doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best results possible.” Our providers work together to deliver those results. We are recognized for our commitment to quality by some of the most respected organizations in healthcare.

When there is an emergency in the pre-hospital environment, any member of the community can call 911 and get trained clinicians dispatched to the scene of the emergency within minutes. But emergencies happen in the hospital as well.

At HCA Florida North Florida Hospital, we have a dedicated Rapid Response Team to respond to any emergency that should arise anywhere in the facility. Because when a patient is declining, it's all hands-on deck to save their life. Time is of the essence and the interdisciplinary Rapid Response Team is there to implement rapid interventions to save their life. Watch this video to learn more about our specialized team.

The role of technology in delivering quality

There is little doubt that advances in technology play an important role in delivering quality healthcare. That is why we are committed to investing in new technology. Here are just a few examples:

  • A partnership with Alachua County Fire & Rescue makes possible the real-time transmission of electrocardiogram (EKG) tests from the field into the emergency room at our hospital to speed the care for patients having the most dangerous kind of heart attacks. In nearby counties without the resources to pay for needed equipment, HCA Healthcare has committed to donating the technology. Emergency and cardiology physicians and staff can be ready to treat patients as soon as they arrive, saving precious minutes
  • Our acquisition of an obstetric (OB) patient information platform makes it possible for physicians to monitor maternity test results in real-time on their smartphones. Because OB doctors cannot be at their patients’ sides through every moment of labor, this increases accuracy in interpreting test results when doctors can see them instantly and remotely on their smartphones.
  • Operating room tracking screens allow family and friends in the surgical waiting rooms to receive up-to-the-minute status updates on their loved ones. While the screens do not affect patient outcomes, they provide comfort and assurance to friends and family waiting for word about their loved ones. We believe that is also a part of quality patient care.
  • An electronic medication administration barcode system is in place to ensure that our patients receive the correct medication and dosage. Similarly, a barcode system enhances patient safety.

  • We make possible access to 911, immediate medical treatment, physician locator, medical library and more through an iTriage application for iPhone and Android users. This brings highly relevant information to patients when they need it.
