The hospital’s commitment to more sustainable operations supports healthier patients, staff, and communities.

Gainesville, Fla. - In recognition of its achievement and innovation in environmental performance in the healthcare sector, North Florida Regional Medical Center (NFRMC) recently received a Practice Greenhealth (PGH) Environmental Excellence Award. PGH is one of the nation’s leading organizations dedicated to environmental sustainability in healthcare. Specifically, NFRMC was awarded for their efforts to virtually eliminate the use of mercury and put measures in place to prevent future use of it.

“As part of our commitment to those we care for in our area, we recognize that healthy communities are connected to healthy environments,” said Eric Lawson, Chief Executive Officer of NFRMC. “We are proud to be one of the select HCA Healthcare hospitals across the nation recognized for our efforts to protect and preserve natural resources by greening hospital practices, promoting conservation and exercising environmentally conscious purchasing.”

The PGH Environmental Excellence Awards are the nation’s premier recognition program for environmental performance in the healthcare sector. The awards are a top standard of excellence in sustainability within healthcare and demonstrate how HCA Healthcare facilities are creating healthier environments for patients, colleagues and communities. The PGH award process allows applicants to share their insights with the healthcare sector in a broad range of categories and build stronger internal teams to continue their successes in sustainability.

“In a shifting healthcare landscape, a focus on sustainability can help build resilience while better protecting the health of patients and the community,” said Gary Cohen, Practice Greenhealth founder. “NFRMC demonstrates the kind of leadership, innovation, and performance that can drive the entire health sector toward more environmentally responsible practices.”
